Bariatric surgery is the term for a surgery that is done to help you lose weight. Bariatric surgery is not recommended for everyone who is overweight or obese. However, it may be an option if you are obese and have not been able to lose weight with other methods, or if you have other medical conditions that are related to being obese like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritic joint diseases, and diabetes.

SHOULD I HAVE SURGERY TO LOSE WEIGHT?
Weight loss surgery is recommended ONLY for people with one of the following
BMI > 40
Severe obesity (body mass index above 40) who have failed repeatedly on conventional weight loss methods, including diet programs, exercise or weight loss behavior modification
BMI > 35
Body mass index above 35 with a specific co-morbid conditions, like diabetes type 2, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, osteo-arthritis or sleep apnea that would improve with weight loss
Referal from General Practitioner and or patient self appointment.
Bariatric Centre evaluation for qualification.
Multidisciplinary team risk assessment and work-up.
Medical Aid application and authorization and funding options
Post -operative care and lifelong follow-up and support.
